Andrew Smith started his career as a monumental mason in London and has over 20 year’s experience of carving. He studied Fine Art at Nottingham University and now works from a studio in the centre of Nottingham.
Andrew works mainly in stone and wood. Rarely using a model, he prefers to carve direct allowing the stone to define the form within. His training as a stone mason means he understands how to work with the raw material and has the ability to bring out the natural beauty in the stone with great attention to the finishing.
“I am fascinated by the human body and the way the shapes and forms of muscle and bone reveal themselves as the body moves. I also enjoy creating pieces which are beautifully finished, tactile and crying out to be touched – just like the human body itself.”
